Mentors Program conducts onsite field experiences (FEs) at multiple venues within Texas A&MUniversity (TAMU) to excite precollege students, to clarify misconceptions about scientific careers, and to improve comprehension of scientific concepts and their applications. During the FEs, the students have the opportunity to visit research labs and other educational venues at TAMU such as:

  •      SIMulation lab,
  •      National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing (NCTM),
  •      Biomedical Engineering department,
  •      Anatomy lab,
  •      Public Health labs, etc.

The students learn about health, research and technology careers and participate in hands-on activities that reflect “real world” careers. As part of the experience, they also engage in career talks from, and open discussions with a diverse group of faculty and trainees, to demonstrate that STEM careers are both attainable and desirable.

Apart from the avenue FEs provide for experiential learning, they also serve as fun time for the students to keep them interested and engaged. A lot of games and competitions are incorporated into the hands-on activities at the various venues. Students also participate in fun quiz games, such as a customized Jeopardy game, with questions based on their experiences all through the day’s events.

 2018 Field Experience Program

On Friday Feb 2nd, 2018, we welcomed a group of 50  students from our partner schools (25 students from Med High and 25 students from MHS) for the Field Experience by hosting them at special dinner ceremony. We gave students a MENTORS shirt at the dinner and encouraged them to wear the shirts for the main FE the following day.

On Saturday Feb 3rd, 2018, we had a full day of activities for the students. They visited various STEM labs and simulation centers where they were engaged in hands-on activities reflecting science and technology careers. They also had an interactive, Lunch 'n' Learn session with a panel of six STEM career professionals(Biomedical Engineer, Nurse, Pharmacist, medical student and Ph.D. candidate, Public Health Scientist), where they learned more about what these careers entail. Students also got a chance to ask questions and discuss their plans and concerns.
